Knock, knock . . . Who's there? . . . Jehovah's Witnesses . . . Uh-oh. That's how it started for Joanna Foreman at the age of five. From there, she gave up almost everything in exchange for the promise of Everlasting Life in a Paradise on Earth. No Christmas tree, Independence Day fireworks, Halloween costumes. No birthday parties or chocolate Easter bunnies. She was not to pledge the flag in school or stand to sing the National Anthem. She wasn't allowed to attend college or vote in political elections. As a youth, she was instructed to dump her worldly friends and would not be allowed to date or marry outside of the religion. Not one to be dismayed, she cleverly found ways around religious obstacles, jumping undaunted through the hoops of man-made beliefs. She managed to make friends, family and happy memories. When she backed away from religion's grasp, her congregational comrades rapidly vanished-she stood entirely alone. The author portrays herself merrily waltzing her way through life despite all religious speed bumps, until she has the emergent need for a blood transfusion after the birth of her third child. Obeying yet another rule, she refuses the treatment and survives to proudly wear an invisible halo which congregation members had bestowed upon her. She keeps her doubts secret until Emma, her best friend of twenty-five years, also refuses a transfusion, with tragic results. Cancer didn't kill Emma-religion did. The lies and back-stabbing that occur immediately after Emma's death allow Joanna to finally see the real truth. She perseveres and endures, coming out of this cultish religion stronger and wiser. While she'd thought she knew it all, the answers Jehovah's Witnesses spoon-fed her no longer satisfy. As she gains the freedom to think for herself and choose her own beliefs, she finds herself more content living in a world among millions of people who don't have all the answers than trapped within parentheses with a few hundred-thousand know-it-alls.

The KnowItAll Girl Joanna Foreman 9780615934723 Books

Joanna Foreman's Know-it-all Girl shares with readers the thoughts and dreams of a young girl who loves her mother very much. From the beginning of the story, the bond between the 5 year old Ms. Foreman and her mother are clear. And this has an impact on much that happens in the book. From a knock on the door to baptism to marriage and children, Ms. Foreman chronicles how as a child and later a young woman, she deals with the inconsistencies and contradictions of a highly structured religion in which she has immersed herself but may not fully accept. The unshakable conviction of a child grows into the more skeptical belief system of an adult while Ms. Foreman navigates marriage, children, and divorce. And through it all, her mother stands by her.

Ms. Foreman has told us the story of her life with wit, style, and honesty. Her ability to look back on what were certainly some dark times endears the reader to Ms. Foreman, who never shirks her responsibility or blames others but approaches life with joy and humor. She has written a lovely memoir that relates the transition from childhood conviction to adult independence. I applaud her journey and wish her all the best!

The KnowItAll Girl Joanna Foreman 9780615934723 Books Reviews

Great book and because of the opportunity to read it I am now looking forward to reading other books by this author. Definitely a great read and it will keep you with it until the end
book new
When I first downloaded and started reading "The Know-it-all Girl," I was expecting a humorous book. Why? Because, for some odd reason, it was in the humor category. However, it didn't take me long to realize that though there are some humorous parts, this book doesn't belong in the humor section.

That being said, I did enjoy this book, and appreciated the author's open and honest telling of her life- how she got into the Jehovah's Witness cult, her life in it, her doubts, and then how she finally got out. I enjoyed the author expressing her thoughts, her doubts, her joys, and her triumphs, and the manner in which she did this expressing.

The reason I gave this book 4 stars is because there are numerous holes in the narrative, where she doesn't mention life events that happen. She will, however, refer back to them, and it's up the reader to plug things into the proper place in the timeline.
Joanna is my cousin, so I have some bias; but over all, I think that her style is provocative and sometimes humorous. I have always felt that she missed out on so much as related to family gatherings for birthdays, Easter, the 4th of July, and Christmas. It appears that by writing about her experiences as a JW, she is going through a metamorphosis - almost a new beginning for her at this stage of her life.
I appreciate Joannes ability to get her life together without religion and have faith in herself. This would be an excellent book for those so wrapped up in the concept of future that they cannot have thoughts and opinions all by themselves. I know too many.
Joanna's Know-it-all Girl is a very well written, honest telling of a very personal story. I was nor raised in The Truth as Joanna but found her openness helped comfort me in looking at my own religious upbringing. I loved the flow of her story as it was told and how her characters were brought to life. Plus I felt the great love she has for her family members both past and present. I've read some of Joanna's writing before and look forward to more great storytelling from her.
I have recommended this to several friends and will recommend it to more. It isn't just about being a Jehovah's Witness but a story of growth, caring and someone who has gone through adversity as we all do and managed to come out on the other side with a better idea of who she is.
Thanks Joanna for your wonderful book.
As a woman with many things in common with this author's experiences, I couldn't put this book down, even to start making dinner. My poor husband. It was that good! The author tells a painful story of all the things a JW child misses out on, the biggest, in my opinion, is what we didn't get to do and what we could've done with our lives had we been allowed to get an education. The God news is, she also shows us how much she was able to accomplish and how she became successful in having a rewarding life in spite of a difficult start. Interspersed with those memories that had me saying, "Yes, don't I remember that!" there is a amazing humor. I love her perceptions in pointing out discrepancies, hypocrisies and blatant twisting of scriptures. I hadn't thought of many of the points she makes, but wow, I see so much more now. I cried in a few spots, maybe because it casts my mind back to the days when I went through similar browbeatings. It meant a lot to know I wasn't the only one and that once we recognize what a cult this is, we can throw off the shackles of our minds and move on,to a very good and healthy life. I loved this book as a female raised from infancy in this cult. The book is very well written, and encouraging as well. I will be reading this book more than once!
